When it comes to blower motor replacement in heating and cooling equipment, HVAC technicians must identify the motor which is the best option. The right motor improves efficiency, comfort, and safety of operations within the OEM specifications.

A PSC, or permanent split capacitor, is a type of motor that turns on and off and is commonly used on blowers, fans, gear motors, and small pumps. Electrical output is not controllable and has no intermediate speeds. Therefore, energy wastage can be high, and this is the reason that the HVAC industry is switching to the use of EC motors.

EC motors, or electronically commutated motors, facilitate speed variability. This allows for energy savings and improvement of air movement. ECMs turn on gradually as opposed to suddenly, with a slow increase of fan speed. This allows the ECM to reach the maximum speeds required as specified by the thermostat.

Many air conditioners and furnaces installed have PSC models as the original blower motor. Therefore, EC motors are usually installers when the device requires a motor replacement. Listed below as some reasons that make EC motors a more attractive choice over PSC motors.

  1. Speed variability: unlike PSC motors that turn on and off, EC motors operate at a range of speeds adjusted from a controller or programmed to adjust the same. Moreover, ECMs feature soft stops as opposed to abrupt stops as well.

  2. Energy savings: EC motors, while pricier to install than PSC motors, deliver significantly higher efficiencies that offset cost differences and thereby contributing to cost savings over the long run.

  3. Increased comfort: Since ECMs run at lower outputs, there is a greater extent of consistency in temperature. This improves indoor air comfort. Also, ECM units have longer circulation periods within the air ducts which improves indoor air quality as well.

  4. Longer lifespan: ECMs’ ball bearings require less frequent lubrication. Additionally, the gradual stops place lower wear and tear on the parts. On average, EC motors last around 10 years compared to the 8 years of good use one might obtain with a PSC motor.

It is on account of these reasons that the EC motor is largely preferred over the PSC motor in the HVAC industry.
